The first in this series of conferences was held in Marseille, France, under the title "International Conference on Surface and Thin Film Studies using Glancing-Incidence X-ray and Neutron Scattering." The participants quickly established a tradition of meeting every two years. This seventh conference takes place three years from the previous one, in part to stagger it relative to the X-Ray Physics Gordon Conference.

The conference has always aimed to highlight emerging scattering techniques and measurements as applied to surfaces, interfaces, and thin films of a variety of materials.
